Elio 2025 Movie Review

The story opens with heartache, focusing on Elio Solis (Yonas Kibreab), an orphaned boy under the care of his aunt, Major Olga Solis (Zoe Saldaña). At an air and space museum, a mourning Elio discovers a “coming soon” exhibit about the Voyager spacecrafts—probes launched in 1977 with golden records bearing Earth’s messages—and begins to dream of finding comfort beyond the stars.

Echoing Lilo & Stitch, the narrative centers on a surrogate parent grappling with their role. Like that film’s reluctant guardian, Olga shelves her own ambitions, including her dream of becoming an astronaut, to raise Elio. Yet, Elio, feeling responsible for her sacrificed aspirations, grows resentful. He skips school, etches messages in beach sand, and tinkers with basic tech to reach out to potential extraterrestrials. The more Olga gives up, the more Elio pulls away, convinced he’s the cause of her unfulfilled dreams. Against all odds, his efforts succeed, contacting aliens and sparking a journey of discovery.

This 99-minute film, wearing its emotions proudly, races forward with a vibe reminiscent of Galaxy Quest. The Communiverse, a diverse intergalactic council of alien races, has intercepted a Voyager probe and plans to respond to Earth. When a desperate Elio learns of this, he uses his aunt’s Air Force base tech to send a reply, leading the Communiverse to mistakenly invite him as Earth’s leader.

Reeling from loss, Elio feels isolated and yearns for a guiding force to bring him purpose. He finds a kindred spirit in Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), a vengeful emperor excluded from the Communiverse, who threatens to annihilate the council for their snub. To prove his worth, Elio volunteers to negotiate with the war-hungry leader. Though his tactics falter, Elio bonds with Grigon’s gentle son, Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who agrees to become Elio’s hostage to escape his father’s warmongering legacy.
