In Budapest, billionaire Pankaj Bhatti (Boman Irani) is found murdered on a deserted road, initially appearing as a hate crime. Before we meet Detective Sherdil, played by Diljit Dosanjh, in this year’s 786th whodunit—a term I’ll likely repeat 786 times before 2025 ends—we learn how his character earned the name Sherdil. The filmmakers aim to blend crime and comedy, simplifying the story, though memories of Dosanjh’s Arjun Patiala might make you wince. To their credit, the aesthetics shine, plunging us into Budapest where billionaire Boman Irani is murdered on a deserted street. The film nails the introduction of Ratna Pathak Shah as Irani’s wife, a character with the commanding swagger of Maya Sarabhai from Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, amped up. Diana Penty calls her “a true boss lady.”

Cringeworthy and convenient plot points soon emerge. Banita Sandhu, known from October, appears as the deaf and mute daughter named—awkwardly—Shanti. Mukesh Bhat, the underutilized talent from Rocket Singh and Gulaal, plays the driver who’s vanished since his employer’s brutal murder, evoking shades of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. When the puzzle pieces align, Sherdil, with his distinctive twang, proclaims, “This is a classic… whodunit.” Fine, but his constant harmonica-playing and its repetitive tune, bleeding into an overblown background score, undercuts any tension. A bit of silence wouldn’t hurt.

Still, the ensemble—Dosanjh, Irani, Shah, Sumeet Vyas, Sandhu, and Penty—is magnetic. Irani’s flamboyant outfits and commanding baritone craft a striking yet secretly fragile persona. Penty delivers gravitas with her no-nonsense vibe, her selective post-Cocktail (2012) roles showcasing a versatile mix of comedy, drama, and now whodunit.
