Criminal Justice: A Family Matter (Season 4) shifts its focus to the Nagpal family—a separated couple, Raj (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) and Anju (Surveen Chawla). Raj finds himself accused of murdering Roshni Saluja (Asha Negi), the caretaker of their 13-year-old daughter, Ira (Khushi Bhardwaj). As the investigation deepens, suspicion also falls on Anju. It’s once again up to Advocate Madhav Mishra and his dependable team to ensure that justice prevails and his client doesn’t end up behind bars for life. But with strong police evidence and a determined public prosecutor, will the defense be able to hold its ground? The answers, however, feel a bit predictable.
The first two seasons of the show were adapted from Peter Moffat’s BBC series of the same name. However, the third and fourth seasons of the Indian version have ventured into original territory while staying true to the formula that has worked previously. This consistency, though reliable, also feels repetitive—viewers can almost tick off elements from a familiar checklist. A fresh narrative twist or a more innovative legal angle might have breathed new life into the franchise.
As with earlier seasons, the series leans heavily on Pankaj Tripathi’s charm and wit to carry the show. His chemistry with his on-screen wife Ratna (Khushboo Atre) and brother-in-law Deep (Aatm Prakash Mishra) brings light moments to the otherwise intense drama. Barkha Singh joins the mix as a new member of Madhav’s informal legal squad. Familiar faces like Mita Vashisht (Mandira), Shweta Basu Prasad (Lekha), and Kalyanee Mulay (the investigating officer) return and follow familiar narrative arcs.
Among the Nagpals, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub plays Raj as a man burdened with secrets, while Surveen Chawla delivers a compelling performance as the emotionally scarred Anju. Despite much talk about their troubled marriage, the show offers little visual insight into it. Khushi Bhardwaj portrays Ira with innocence and sensitivity, highlighting her Asperger’s condition. Sadly, Asha Negi’s character, the murder victim, fades into the background as the season progresses through its eight episodes.
